15.13.5a Body Weight as a Performance Factor

BODY WEIGHT AS A PERFORMANCE FACTOR AND THE PREVENTION OF
EATING DISORDERS AMONG STUDENT-ATHLETES

Any training rule, regulation, or request which involves weight loss or weight gain must be developed according to the requirements of the department’s established policies regarding dealing with weight as a performance factor (see below).  If weight loss/gain is a performance-related concern of the coach, nutritional services (i.e., safe dietary practices, individual and team counseling) shall be provided for the athlete.  Any significant changes in body weight or unusual eating habits/behavior should be brought to the attention of the medical staff.  Arrangements for addressing these concerns will be initiated through the sports medicine staff.  The team physician, nutritionist, and/or staff athletic trainers are the only medical personnel authorized to provide specific diet programs to student-athletes.  Coaches will not set weight goals for athletes, have team members weigh-in, or confer with their athletes about their body weight.
